Episode Description

“I Will Never Forget” is a book that tells the heartbreaking, touching story of a mother’s journey through dementia.  Elaine C. Pereira tells the story of her mother, and her decline with illness.  Dementia is often feared as people get older, but the true impact of this disease can be misunderstood until you are in the middle of it.  As her daughter, and later her caregiver, Elaine C. Pereira is discussing this story with us to help bring more awareness and help others find their way if they are in a similar situation.

Dr. Risk’s Thoughts

As I read through Elaine’s book about her Mother’s journey with dementia, I saw many parallels to my own life.  My Grams (Mom’s Mom) had dementia, and I witnessed her cognitive decline over the years as our family struggled with her illness.  I am also the same age as Elaine’s daughters, so I knew this story was going to hit home.  When we have known someone at their best, it is hard to see them struggle at the end of their life.  I have done a show before on caregivers and how difficult it is, and I think this part of our lives doesn’t get the recognition it deserves.  Dementia is not glamourous, and is extremely painful for those watching their beloved family member lose their memory and ability to cope.  For anyone who has been in this situation, you will be able to relate.  By sharing her story, Elaine is letting you know that you are not alone.

Guest Information

Within a few years, author Elaine Pereira dealt with the premature deaths of her sister-in-law, father, brother and the rapid decline of her mother. The most difficult challenge of these life-changing events was accompanying her mom through her struggle with and eventual surrender to Alzheimer’s.

These experiences, both tragic and funny and lessons learned during this compassionate journey led Pereira to write the exquisite and revealing memoir I Will Never Forget. Others facing the same challenges will benefit from the insights Pereira shares.

A native of Kalamazoo, Elaine and husband Joseph live in SE Michigan with their two big dogs and two new cats. Together they have five adult children and five young grandchildren.

Pereira earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Therapy and Masters from Wayne State University. Her professional career as an OT was with special needs children and adult home care. Pereira also holds certificates as a Certified Dementia Practitioner and Caregiver.
