Falling Through the Cracks: Feel alive and thrive

The Spirit of Illness » Listen Now

Episode Description

While going through a chronic illness we often focus on the physical symptoms and the physical causes. Whether the emotional and spiritual aspects are part of the illness, or a bi-product of it, the spirit is often over looked in Western Medicine. Chinese medicine views the spirit or “shen” as our consciousness, mental functions, mental health, vitality, and our “presence”. One of the most important things in recovery from a long illness is to find ourselves again, but there is little guidance on how to do so. Dr. Lisa Weleschuk will discuss the spirit and its importance in our health journey.

Dr. Risk’s Thoughts

It was a long journey for me to find myself again after being chronically ill.  I can see that with a lot of my patients as well.  Having a chronic illness can change your personality, and cause damage to so much of your life.  Once you feel strong enough, it’s important to start finding “spirit” again.  For me, I think this is an ongoing journey.  Even though I flag my Lyme journey as a significant journey, I also see each day a journey where I am learning more about myself, and creating and recreating who I am.
