Date: March 26, 2018
Episode Description
Abby Norman is on a quest to make doctors listen to women’s pain. With years of being undiagnosed and told her symptoms were “all in her head”, Abby learned to navigate the medical system and advocate for herself. Now she has combined her research to make sure other women can be heard, and refute the belief that being a woman is a pre-exiting condition. She is sharing her story in her book “Ask Me About My Uterus.”
Dr. Risk’s Thoughts
Abby Norman has bravely shared her story as a woman suffering with Women’s Health issues. Although I don’t have the issues she has, I am no stranger to having the female parts of me ignored by doctors, or told that strange symptoms were “normal” when the so obviously weren’t. I think it’s also important for doctors to understand that those of us who are suffering, whether it’s endometriosis like Abby, or other chronic conditions like Lyme, aren’t making things up. We legitimately want help, and we are asking our doctors, the ones who are trained with the knowledge to help us, to listen.
