Episode Description of “Stress Solutions”

Stress is a rising epidemic in our society, and most people feel they are just treading water without any idea how to handle what is going on.  Clinical psychologist Arthur P.  Ciaramicoli explains how to overcome stress in his book The Stress Solution: Using Empathy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to Reduce Anxiety and Develop Resilience. With research, real life examples, dietary recommendations and lifestyle advice, he helps people be able to lessen stress levels and lead a more satisfied life.

Dr. Risk’s Thoughts

I think that everyone can relate to the topic of stress.  But What I love about this book by Arthur Ciaramicoli is that that solution for stress is so different.  The idea that empathy can have such power in our lives to reduce stress had me thinking.  The week that I was reading the book and preparing for the show I started to slow down, and look at those that I was speaking to.  I have done many shows about mindfulness, and being aware of yourself, but I found this an added twist to the advice that I loved.  If we all showed empathy and compassion to those around us, I believe that we would feel calmer and more connected with our world.

In his book, Arthur spoke about our need to list off all that we got done on our “to do” list.  I can certainly relate to this feeling of pride of “everything I accomplished today.”  He suggests that this is not as important.  Taking the time to connect with our families, partners, friends and those around us has more value.  For those of us in the middle of a busy life, taking that one moment in the day to slow down may make a world of difference.
