Culturally we have an expectation to burn the candle at both ends, and burn ourselves out.  We must be busy to be successful, and if we aren’t sacrificing ourselves we aren’t a good parent, partner, employee, volunteer etc.  In her book “It’s okay to Start With You,” Julia Hogan explains self care and self compassion, and gives a detailed plan on how you can get started.

Self care is an important topic I bring up with my patients every day.  Even when we’re sick, we tend to feel guilty and push ourselves past breaking point.  I think it’s important to learn self care as children, so that as adults we know how to care for ourselves and take time to rest.
