Episode Description of How I Gave Up Dieting and Got a Life

“No one is broken.  I’ve never met anyone who was broken.”

-Big Girl: How I Gave Up Dieting & Got A Life

Kelsey Miller took on a life changing challenge to embrace a new way of eating.  In a society that pressures women to look a certain way, she definitely felt this pressure while growing up.  She took years of yo-yo dieting and poor body image, and decided to face her fears and recreate her relationship with food.  She embraced “Intuitive Eating” and went on the arduous journey to train herself to listen to what her body needed and craved, instead of binge eating, fad diets and late night purges.  In her book “Big Girl: How I Gave Up Dieting and Got a Life” Kelsey lays out the struggles of this journey.

Dr. Risk’s Thoughts

I have wanted to do a show on body image for a while, and I was excited when I found Kelsey’s book.  I actually found it on a list of top ten health books of the week, and nine of those books were about diet and weight loss.  In a society so obsessed with food restrictions and body image, I recognize how important this topic is.  I found so many pieces of myself while reading this book.  I think we can all find moment where we know our relationship with food isn’t at its optimum, or where we are so hard on ourselves for not having the “perfect” body.  I love Kelsey’s determination to change how we view our bodies in our society.
