In the US, Chinese traditional medicine is a popular complementary or alternative therapy among patients with chronic liver disease and other chronic disease sufferers. In a late 1990′s anecdotal report from one of the largest clinical hepatology practices in San Francisco found that at least 20 to 30 percent of patients report use of Chinese herbal interventions for hepatitis. The level of use, in chronic disease treatment, is probably underestimated because patients often choose not to divulge the use of complementary and alternative medicine therapies to their Western primary care physician.
For acute conditions and emergency aid, western medicine is very helpful and is necessary. However for chronic and difficult conditions, western medicine falls short in its exclusive use of synthetically derived chemical medications for treatment, these treatments often result in myriad of side effects that sometimes can be worse than the symptoms of the disease itself. Most people who suffer from disease are looking for alternatives to chronic disease treatments currently offered by western medical system. Traditional Chinese Medicine is based upon the natural herbs and always emphasizes multiple, comprehensive and flexible treatment strategies that attempt to find the cause of the disease not simply mask the symptoms with synthetically derived compounds.
Chinese medicine uses nutrition, acupuncture, heat therapies such as moxibustion, exercise, massage, meditation, and herbal medicine for the treatment of people with chronic diseases. Protocols have been developed that have successfully helped Lyme infected people to decrease and eliminate symptoms, often significantly reducing the side effects of the chronic disease treatment. Other conditions such as Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome usually respond really well to the treatment protocols of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
