The obvious cause of pregnancy back pain is the biomechanical stress being placed on the mother by the added weight of her baby. As the baby gains weight, the mother is pulled forward. To compensate for this forward pull, the mother has to lean her upper body backward. This puts a tremendous amount of pressure on the lower back and pelvis.
This type of pain is not symptomatic of injury so it needs to be approached from a different point of view. The strength and tone of the muscular system is an extremely important factor when assessing a patient with lower back pain. Unfortunately, muscle imbalances are not addressed in a wholistic way by most health practitioners.
Acupuncture looks at treatment of pregnancy back pain in a way that is very different then most western medical practitioners. A whole body is looked at when a diagnosis is made. The idea of strengthening the body so it can naturally support the pregnancy is explored.
When we look at treatment of pregnancy back pain, lower extremity meridian topography and nerve pathways are examined. Traditional Chinese Medical (TCM) and Western perspective of:
- the lower extremity and its relationship to the low back
- similarities to the upper extremity, and common causes of lower extremity pain
- knee and ankle range of motion
- posture and biomechanics
- motor points of muscles acting on the knee, ankle and foot
All these parts are important to assess and derive a proper diagnosis. By re-aligning the body, pregnancy back pain can be significantly reduced or eliminated.
This is an effective treatment protocol that can help reduce discomfort of pregnancy back pain and ultimately help with the delivery as well.
